LUX or Lumens, What's the Difference?

When it comes to measuring the brightness of light, most people are familiar with lumens. Lumens are commonly used to determine the brightness of light bulbs, flashlights, and other lighting products. However, when it comes to light boxes, LUX is a more important indicator of brightness. Here we will explain the difference between LUX and lumens and why LUX is a better indicator of brightness for light boxes.

Lumens vs. LUX

Lumens and LUX are both units of measurement used to determine the amount of visible light emitted by a source. Lumens are used to measure the total amount of light output by a light source, regardless of its direction. This means that lumens can give you an idea of how bright a light source is, but not necessarily how well it will illuminate a particular area.

LUX, on the other hand, is a measure of the amount of light that falls on a surface. Specifically, LUX is the amount of light that falls on a surface per unit area. In other words, LUX measures the brightness of the light in a specific area such as at the surface of a light box. This makes LUX a more useful measure of brightness when it comes to light boxes as you can compare it with other light boxes of different sizes.

Why LUX is Important for Light Boxes

While lumens measure the total amount of light emitted by a light source, lux measures the amount of light that falls on a given surface area. This means that lux gives a better indication of how bright a light source will appear when viewed from a particular distance or angle, which is more relevant for applications like light boxes. A high lumen output might not necessarily translate to a high lux value if the light is spread out over a large surface area. It is important to choose a light box with a high lux value to ensure that it provides sufficient brightness for its intended use. Light boxes are used in a variety of industries, including graphic design and industrial quality control or inspection tasks and in essence if you want to know how much light will be transmitted through a translucent material or object, then LUX is the number to focus on.

How bright is the Beam Box?

The Beam Box is exceptionally bright at 12,000 lux at the screen. When set to its maximum brightness, it can effortlessly illuminate through 400g/sqm card or around five regular sheets of paper. To ensure user comfort during prolonged use, the light intensity can be adjusted with the dimmer. Additionally, the ultra-high frequency of the dimmer eliminates flickering, which may not be noticeable with standard dimmable LEDs but can cause eye strain and headaches for certain users.

LUX or Nits?

"Nits" and "lux" are both units of measurement used to quantify brightness, particularly in the context of light-emitting devices like light boxes. While they both measure brightness, they do so in slightly different ways.

Lux (lx) is a standard unit of measurement for illuminance, which is the amount of light that falls on a surface. It measures the intensity of light over an area, specifically how much light is received by a surface per unit area. Lux is commonly used to measure the brightness of ambient light in a room or outdoor environment.

On the other hand, nits (nt) measure the brightness of a light source directly. One nit is equivalent to one candela per square meter (cd/m²). Nits are often used to measure the brightness of displays, including screens, monitors, and, in this case, light boxes. Unlike lux, which measures the brightness of the light that falls on a surface, nits measure the brightness emitted by the light source itself.

In the context of a light box, the brightness specified in nits indicates how bright the light emitted by the light box is. This measurement helps users understand how well the light box will illuminate their work surface. A higher number of nits typically means a brighter light box, which can be advantageous for tasks requiring precise illumination, such as tracing, drawing, or inspecting detailed work.

While lux and nits measure different aspects of brightness, they are related. The relationship between lux and nits depends on the distance between the light source and the surface being illuminated. As the distance increases, the lux value decreases, while the nits value remains constant because it measures the brightness emitted by the light source itself.
